Horseback Riding

HORSEBACK RIDING IS A WAY OF LIFE IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN WEST AND LONE MOUNTAIN RANCH IS NO EXCEPTION.

Our wranglers will guide you through some of the most diverse and spectacular scenery in the west. Whether you are horseback riding on the Ranch, in the bordering Lee Metcalf Wilderness or Gallatin National Forest or in Yellowstone National Park, all of your riding takes place in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. We have a well-trained herd of horses and experienced wranglers who lead our rides with enjoyment, education and safety in mind.

Rides are limited to a few riders per wrangler so the wranglers are able to provide more specialized attention informing guests about the area and what they are seeing along the ride. The wranglers will spend time with guests on their first full day assessing their abilities and matching them with the best horse and riding experiences for their ability level. Some of our guests come with previous riding experience, but it is not required. Our wranglers can teach beginners the skills they need to enjoy their time on horseback and also advance the skills of more experienced riders.

Lone Mountain Ranch is an ideal place for young people ages 6+ to develop the skills and self-confidence to ride a horse. We begin with basic horsemanship and control skills and build on those skills throughout the week. Kids are welcome to join their parents for family-oriented rides or participate in rides with other kids in the Outdoor Youth Adventure Program.

Whether you are heading out to fly fish a high alpine lake or stream or traveling into Yellowstone to conquer a peak, Lone Mountain Ranch is able to guide you on the journey.  For any overnight pack trips, we would be happy to recommend an outfitter.

To ensure horse and rider safety in mountainous terrain, we enforce a rider weight limit of 230 pounds

LONE MOUNTAIN RANCH WAS FIRST HOMESTEADED AS A CATTLE RANCH IN 1915.

Since then, generations of owners, guests and crew have been inspired by the love of this land to create the exceptional experience the Ranch is today. Everything we do is guided by the principles of those who came before us, to add to the natural wealth we have inherited and to share with new generations what makes it so special.

We exist in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and are able to continue offering soul stretching experiences to our guests and crew because of everything this ecosystem provides. A dedication to preserving this place and sharing it with others is a commitment that not only binds all of us here, but leads us to get involved with a variety of philanthropic organizations with similar missions. We support a variety of organizations; some whose mission it is to sustain the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, it’s waters, wildlife and land, some who are committed to exposing kids to the outdoors and others that promote and conserve open space for recreation. We also have a big soft spot for organizations in our backyard.

Naturally, sharing Lone Mountain Ranch with others requires them actually getting to the Ranch in shape to hit the ground running for their adventures. We’ll arm you with information on what to pack and how to get here and even give you a few more tidbits on the state of Montana, which few places can hold a candle to. If you have any questions, please never hesitate to give us a ring.
